Meghalaya is paradise on Earth. Although most tourists visit during the summer time, Meghalaya is at its peak of beauty during the months of January and February. This was my first solo destination in India, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. As a female solo traveler, I was a little intimidated exploring alone, but the warmth and hospitality that the locals showed me truly made the trip an unforgettable trip. Aside from this, getting absorbed into Meghalaya’s surreal beauty was definitely the icing on the cake.
During my five-day solo trip to the state of Meghalaya, I leisurely toured four different areas that were: Shillong, Cherapunjee, Dawki, and Mawlynnong. Known for its basic city sightings, Shillong would be your starting point in Meghalaya. To truly experience nature’s highlights, you must get out of the city to surrounding areas of Cherapunjee, Dawki, and Mawlynnong.
Places worth checking out in Shillong include the Police Bazaar, Shillong’s Peak, Elephanta Caves, Smit Village, and the golf grounds. Although it is very much doable to walk around Shillong (as I did) with pleasant weather, share taxis are available all around the city. You can explore the rest of the surrounding areas by hiring a personal cab or booking a guided bus tour, depending on your budget. A day in Cherapunjee is most definitely worth visiting. A guided bus tour takes you through eight different spots. Spending a night in Cherapunjee is also worth it if you’re especially into experiencing something more offbeat. The next few days can be spent roaming Dawki and Mawlynnong. Mawlynnong holds the name for the cleanest village of Asia, and you’ll be blown away walking through the village that operates on self-made rainwater drainage systems. A delicious lunch and chat with the locals will provide you with everlasting memories. At Dawki, you can glide through the clear, crystal blue waters on a boat, as you witness the edge of Bangladesh, making for a spectacular end to your trip.
In this itinerary, I will list out all the experiences I had in each of those four places. This will include a list of guided tours, restaurants, and shopping spots to explore. I will also provide you with personal tips on bargaining and getting around the city of Shillong. Finally, I will also delineate the costs for both accommodation and transport, connecting you to personal references of mine.
