Top 5 Weekend Getaways from Hyderabad

July 25, 2017

The City of Hyderabad, as beautiful as it is with The Charminar, Hussain Sagar Lake, Birla Mandir, etc., offers several options for exotic weekend getaways. Here’s a list of five weekend getaways that I recommend you explore the next time you are in Hyderabad:

Mahabubnagar

Named after the 6th Nizam of Hyderabad, Mahabubnagar is primarily known for the numerous religious and historic sites. Among the temples, Jogulamba Temple and Ranganayaka Swamy Temple are the most popular among the tourists. Another major attraction is Pillalamarri Banyan tree that’s over 800 years old and has many prop roots that are spread over 3 acres of land. Mahabubnagar is about 102 kms  (via Srinagar-Kanyakumari Highway) from Hyderabad and it takes about 2 hrs by car, to reach the place.

Maredumilli and Rampachodavaram

A perfect picnic spot to head out to with friends and family, Maredumilli and Rampachodavaram is located within the Forest Areas and has several waterfalls such as Jalatarangini Waterfalls and Swarnadhara & Rampa waterfalls. It’s about 430 kms from Hyderabad and it takes about 8.5 hours to reach the place.

Hampi

About 375 kms and 8.5 hrs away from Hyderabad, the village and temple town of Hampi in Karnataka is a very popular tourist destination. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and located within the ruins of the city of Vijayanagara, Hampi is also an important religious centre with Virupaksha Temple, Vithala Temple complex, Monkey Temple, etc. Tourists who like Rock Climbing are also attracted to the place as it offers several options for them.
Belum Caves

The largest cave system, Belum Caves is epitomized by long passages, vast caverns, and galleries. Although Belum cave system is the longest in India that’s open to tourists, they can only access upto 1.5 km; it is, however, easily accessible as APTDC has made excellent arrangements such as electronic gates, metal staircase, etc. for the ease of the tourists. Belum Caves is about 320 kms away from Hyderabad and it takes about 6.5 hours by car to reach the place.

Dandeli

Dandeli is about 565 kms or a 12 hour drive from the city of Hyderabad, Dandeli is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka. It is also a tiger reserve and home to over 300 species of birds. The place also attracts a lot of adventure sports enthusiasts as it’s perhaps the only place where they can go for white water rafting in the peak summer months  of May & June.
