Top 5 Street Food of Delhi - Author's Choice

June 26, 2017

Food: the final frontier.

These are the favorite street food of a Delhi-ite who has explored every nook and corner of the Delhi to bring to you places/street shops that provide him with gastronomical delight.

Yes, Star Trek Fans would probably cringe while reading the adaptation of the famous quote; they must understand that Food (NOT Space) is the Final Frontier for most human beings in real life. For the Foodies in Delhi, they will boldly go to every street that offers great food. Here’s a list of some of the places that the author can vouch for:

Paranthe from Paranthe Wali Gali

One could perhaps even sniff the flavor around by-lanes of Chandni Chowk that offer the tastiest Paranthas in Delhi. Although the place offers a strictly vegetarian menu, the variety of choices available can often create bouts of Fear of Missing Out. From the usual suspects such as Paranthas made of Aaloo/Potato, Paneer/Cottage Cheese, Cauliflower, etc., one could even try Paranthas made of Papad, Banana, Khoya, etc.

Momos from Dolma Aunty Momo joint

Dolma Aunty’s Momo shop, situated in Lajpat Nagar, has been the numero uno choice for Momo lovers for more than 2 decades now. The momos served at the place are to die for! As much as it’s the most clichéd way of explaining how good the Momos are, those who have had the momos will agree with the choice of the phrase. Perfectly steamed and adequately stuffed, the momos are accompanied with a nicely spiced sauce. And yes, they just melt in your mouth.

Egg Rolls from any of the eateries at CR Park (a.k.a Chittaranjan Park)

If you have ever had Egg Rolls in Kolkata and are craving to have them again, you won’t need to wait for your next trip to Kolkata. Just visit any of the eateries at CR Park and ask for Egg Roll, Mutton/Chicken Roll (with/without egg), and/or Paneer Roll. Believe you me, these rolls are as good if not better than those available in Kolkata.

Fruit Chaat at Bishan Swaroop Chaat Corner

A must visit place in Chandni Chowk, Bishan Swaroop Chaat corner has been serving mouth watering Fruit Chaats since a very long time. I am sure some of our grandparents in Delhi would have enjoyed Bishan Swaroop’s Fruit Chaat in their youth – some say they have been serving chaats since 1923. Another favorite among the Chaat lovers is Aloo Chaat.

Shawarma at Al-Bake

Serving its own version of Lebanese Shawarma, Al-bake at New Friends Colony has probably accounted for at-least 50% of the chaos around Parking in the area. The customers who come from afar to have their favorite Chicken Shawarma as a takeaway, park their cars at odd places, blocking traffic or exits for other parked cars. The Pita Bread in which the Shawarma is rolled, the garlic mayonnaise, and the Shawarma meat itself cooked over a rotisserie flame add to the anticipation and perhaps the taste for the customers.
