Top 5 Places to Explore in Northeast India

Top 5 Places to Explore in Northeast India

July 13, 2017

Northeast India has perhaps been one of the least explored regions of India despite having a breathtaking landscape, diverse culture, amazing people and culinary heritage across Sikkim and the '7 sisters' (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura).

Although, in recent times, an increasing number of travelers have been heading to the Northeast for wildlife and adventure activities, the region has a lot more to offer to travelers with varied interests such as Sightseeing, Experiential Travel, Festival & Events, etc. While I may not be able to do justice to Northeast by short-listing just 5 places, the following are the ones I enjoyed the most:

Loktak Lake, Manipur

Loktak Lake in Manipur

The largest Freshwater lake in Northeast India, Loktak Lake is not only popular among tourists for the Floating Islands but is also a lifeline for the economy of Manipur. Located in the South West part of the lake, Keibul Lamjao National Park is the only floating National Park in the world. One must take a boat ride to experience the floating islands from up close. The region also has a rich flora and fauna with 233 species of aquatic plants, over 100 species of birds, and 425 species of animals. I recommend that you stay at Sendra Resort as it's surrounded on two sides by Loktak Lake. At the resort you will find both cottages and rooms that will offer a clear view of the lake. The restaurant at the resort is also perfectly located, giving a clear view of the lake.

Kaziranga National Park, Assam
Kaziranga National Park

Home to two-thirds of the world's great one-horned rhinoceros population, Kaziranga National Park is also home to some of the world’s most endangered species of birds and wildlife. If you want to do tiger spotting, the Tiger Resrve of Kaziranga offers plenty of opportunities to spot tigers. The vast expanse of marshland, forests, elephant grass, etc., is a spectacular sight for those who want to just immerse themselves in nature. One should spend at-least a day in the Kaziranga Park. One should check-in to a jungle lodge the night before and try the early morning elephant safari on the next day.

Tawang Monastery, Arunachal Pradesh
Tawang Monastery The largest Monastery in India and the second largest in the world, Tawang Monastery attracts a large number of Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world. The monastery also offers a breathtaking view of the valley and celestial beauty at night. The main temple (Dukhang) is decorated with exquisite sculptures, paintings, and carvings. One would need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Tawang – most tourists who come via Guwahati by flight get the ILP at the Airport (from the Arunachal Pradesh tourist counter). You can also get the ILP at the Arunachal Bhavan in Guwahati.

Nathu La Pass, Sikkim

Located in Northern Sikkim, Nathu La Pass is particularly popular among those who, like me, are particularly fond of trekking. The high altitude of the pass provides a vantage point for travelers to get a stunning view of the Kanchenjunga peaks. The region is covered with snow for most part of the year and is best visited during summers (April to June) when the temperature is around 15°C.

Seven Sisters Waterfall, Meghalaya

Also known as the Nohsngithiang Falls or Mawsmai Falls, the Seven Sisters Waterfalls is one of the tallest in India at approximately 315m height. The best time to visit the place is just after the monsoons when the 7 streams of the waterfall combine to generate pure force of water coming down the East Khasi Hills. The waterfall is best viewed during sunset.
