Top 5 Offbeat Places in Coorg - Author's Choice

July 10, 2017

If you have been contemplating visiting Coorg, now is perhaps the best time to visit as June onward (till August) becomes rather inhospitable with humidity and heavy rainfall. While planning for Coorg, I am sure you would’ve chalked out places such as Namdroling Monastery, Abbey Falls, Rajat Sea, Iruppu Falls, Talakaveri, etc. We recommend that you also also plan for the following offbeat places:

Thadiyandamol Hills

At 1748m, Thadiyandamol Hills is the highest mountain peak of Coorg and offers a spectacular view of the Shola Forests in the valleys.  It takes approximately 2 – 2.5 hours from Nalaknad palace to reach the peaks of Thadiyandamol Hills. The place is of particular interest for trekkers and the climb to the top and back can be completed in the same day. The visitors must check with local authorities before heading out as trekking may not always be allowed.

Chelavara Falls

About 16km from Virajpet and very close to Thadiyandamol, Chelavara Falls has surprisingly not attracted as many tourists as has Abbey or Iruppu Falls. If you are a nature lover, the lush greenery is a sight to behold and one can enjoy the same with some privacy because of fewer tourists at the place. While one can get into the water, the locals advise not to do so; you must keep an eye out for all the danger signs and adhere to the local advice.

Honnamana Kere Lake

Situated about 6 km from Somwarpet town, Honnamana Kere Lake is the largest lake in Coorg. If you enjoy some peaceful and quiet time, this is the place to be. If you are spiritual, there’s a temple adjacent to the lake that’s dedicated to Goddess Honanmana. The place is surrounded by mountains, hills, and coffee plantations. The visitors must carry their own snacks/food as they will not find any eateries around the area. Also, do not rely too much on Google Maps to reach the place as you may end up on forest roads that are blocked.

Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary

Home to endangered rare birds, Pushpagiri wildlife  sanctuary is easily accessible by road and is about 27 kms from Madikeri. About 70% of the sanctuary is covered with dense forests with Kukke Subramanya and Bisle Reserve Forests on either side. The place is a nature lover’s delight as besides the dense forests, one can also see waterfalls, mountain streams, etc. The steep terrain resulting from the altitude of the region varies from less than 200m to more than 1700m.

Brahmagiri Hills

At an altitude of 1608m, Brahmagiri Hill is very scenic and has a lot of forests and wildlife. The place has increasingly becoming a major tourist attraction and you must visit before it becomes another touristy destination in Coorg. The winds at top of the hills are very strong and it requires certain amount of physical fitness to climb up the hill. It’s a short 9km trek from the popular Irupu Falls. If you are a trekker, hiker, and photographer, you will enjoy climbing up the hill. The best time to visit is early mornings or late evenings. In case you plan to trek, you will require permission from Range Forest Office at Srimangala.
