Monsoon Getaways in South India

August 07, 2017

Looking to plan a vacation around the Southern part of the India around end July-August? Here are some ideas of great monsoon getaways around the South, to get you started:

  1. Agumbe
Popularly called the ‘Cherrapunji of the South’, Agumbe was also the setting used in the TV adaptation of the famous ‘Malgudi Days’ series by R.K Narayan. For those who enjoy the outdoors, Agumbe offers several trekking trails and numerous waterfalls (Barkana Falls, Kunchikal Falls, Jogigundi Falls and Onake Abbi Falls) which are in spate during the monsoon. Additionally, the town contains ruins of ancient temples that date back to the Hoysala empire.

  1. Chikmagalur
With its verdant green coffee estates, abundant natural beauty, glorious waterfalls and deep valleys, Chikmagalur is a crowd favourite among tourists during this time of the year. Apart from experiencing life on the coffee estates, there’s a lot more to do at Chikmagalur.

Additionally, these months are also among the few months when adventure seekers can go rafting in Coorg. Thinking of planning a trip? Here are some ideas of offbeat places to see in Coorg, to get you started.

  1. Andaman & Nicobar Islands
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands take on a whole new look during the monsoon and one can benefit greatly from the off-season discounts. On the islands, it rains off and on ensuring that one need not be indoor-bound all the time.
  1. Kerala

While Kerala is not just a single place, most parts of the State are even more beautiful during the monsoon making it difficult to choose one or two places to include on our list. Whether it is experiencing the misty, verdant tea and spice plantations of Munnar, visiting the largest waterfall in Kerala- Athirapally Falls, enjoying a ‘wet’ monsoon in Wayanad, taking languid backwater rides in Kumarakom or Alleppey or even enjoying a relaxed stay at a cottage overlooking the Ashtamundi Lake that is fed by eight channels, there are endless options in Kerala.
